The Crusaders’ decision to retire their iconic matchday horses marks the end of one of New Zealand rugby’s most recognisable pre-match traditions, closing a chapter that has defined home game atmosphere in Christchurch for nearly 30 years.

The six horses, each representing a provincial union in the upper South Island, have led the team onto the field since the franchise’s inception in 1996.

Riding out to the soundtrack of ‘Conquest of Paradise’, they became a symbol of identity, power and continuity through earthquakes, stadium changes, and eras of dominance in Super Rugby.

However, with the move to the new One New Zealand Stadium (Te Kaha), the tradition has been deemed unsafe to continue. The modern venue has been designed to bring fans closer to the action, but that same intimacy has created significantly less space around the field of play.

After extensive assessments, the club concluded the horses could not be safely accommodated within the stadium’s layout.

Crusaders officials stressed that the decision was not made lightly. Multiple options were explored, including turf protection systems, modified entry routes, and other infrastructure adjustments, but none could guarantee the safety of the horses, riders, players, or spectators. In the end, the risk of collisions or horses entering the playing surface proved unavoidable.

Club leadership described the move as deeply emotional, acknowledging the horses have been woven into the team’s identity for three decades.

Riders and supporters also expressed disappointment, showing their long association with the franchise and the pride taken in being part of the matchday spectacle.

Despite the farewell, the Crusaders have indicated the tradition will be honoured in other ways, with plans to acknowledge the riders and horses who have been part of the club’s history.

The organisation is also considering a new pre-game ritual to replace the horse parade as it enters a new era at Te Kaha Stadium.
