In Ōtautahi Christchurch, Purapura Whetū is making a difference in the lives of Tamariki, rangitahi, and whānau through a wide range of health and social services grounded in Kaupapa Māori values. With a deep commitment to holistic wellbeing and cultural identity, the organisation provides support that is tailored, respectful, and responsive to the needs of the community.

Purapura Whetū began as a Māori mental health provider and has since grown to offer an expansive portfolio of services than span physical health, mental health, addiction support, youth mentoring, family wellbeing and cultural connection. Its name, which means ‘cluster of stars,’ symbolises the many people coming together to shine brighter as a collective. This philosophy is reflected in the organisations work, which brings together whānau, professionals, and community partners to uplift and empower those in need.

Youth-Focused Services

A major focus of Purapura Whetū’s work is with young people. They offer extensive support for children and young adults aged 5 to 24, through services like Mana Ake, Manu Ka Rere, Tupuranga Attendance and Engagement, and Tupuranga Transition to Adulthood. These programmes help young people navigate challenges at school, at home, and in life, with a strong emphasis on resilience, belonging, and personal growth.

Mental Health and Addiction Support

Mental health services are a core part of the organisation’s work. These include counselling, therapy, support for co-existing mental health and addiction challenges, and help with emotional regulation, trauma, and stress. Programmes such a Ka Pou Whenua, Mate Wareware (dementia care), and Tū Manawa Ora offer accessible pathways for healing and support, rooted in both clinical best practices and te ao Māori.

Life Transitions and Housing Assistance

Purapura Whetū supports individuals and families through key life transitions. This includes help for young people leaving care, refugee families resettling in New Zealand, and people in need of stable accommodation. Services such as Fast Track, Ngā Maihi Supported Youth Accommodation, and Pōwhiri Refugee Family Support Settlement provide practical guidance and wraparound support.

Strengthening Cultural Identity and Whānau Wellbeing

Cultural identity and family wellbeing are interwoven throughout all the services offered. Programmes such as Whānau Ora Navigator, Muslim Wellbeing Ōtautahi, and Te Kākano Hauora help individuals and families reconnect with their whakapapa, strengthen cultural pride, and navigate their journey with confidence. This inclusive approach embraces both Māori and other ethnic communities living in Christchurch, ensuring that everyone is seen, heard, and supported.

Physical Health and Community Wellness

In the realm of physical health, Purapura Whetū runs initiatives focused on smokefree support, nutrition, and elder care. These include Te Hā – Waitaha Smokefree Support, Puāwai Kai, Te Kauae Elder Support, and ACC Navigator services. These services promote wellbeing across all stages of life and reinforce the importance of being safe, connected, and thriving both mentally and physically.

How to Access Support

Referrals to any of the services can be made online, and the team works closely with whānau to ensure they are linked to the right support. For emergencies or urgent mental health concerns, the organisation provides clear pathways to external 24/7 support services.
